Pansexual & Panromantic Awareness and Visibility Day 2023

Updated: Jul 30, 2023

To raise awareness and celebrate pansexual and panromantic identities, Pansexual and Panromantic Awareness Day is observed on May 24th each year. This day serves as an opportunity to educate others about pansexuality and panromanticism and to celebrate the diversity of sexual and romantic identities within the LGBTQIA+ community. Here's everything you need to know...

What does it mean to be Pansexual and/or Panromantic?

Pansexual and panromantic are two terms that describe an individual's romantic or sexual attraction to others regardless of their gender identity or expression. Instead, they are attracted to people based on their personality.

Those that identify as Pansexual and panromantic individuals face a number of unique challenges, including a lack of visibility and understanding within the wider LGBTQIA+ community. Often misunderstood or mislabeled as bisexual, pansexual and panromantic individuals are frequently overlooked or excluded from conversations about sexual and romantic identity. Many people assume that sexual and romantic attraction must be based on binary gender identities, but this is not the case for pansexual and panromantic individuals.

Are Pansexual & Panromantic different?

Pansexuality and panromanticism are often used interchangeably, but they actually refer to slightly different aspects of attraction.

Pansexuality refers to a sexual orientation where someone is attracted to people regardless of their gender identity or expression. This means that a pansexual person may be attracted to people who identify as male, female, non-binary, genderqueer, or any other gender identity.

On the other hand, panromanticism refers to a romantic orientation where someone is romantically attracted to people regardless of their gender identity or expression. This means that a panromantic person may be romantically attracted to people of any gender identity, including male, female, non-binary, genderqueer, or any other gender identity.

It's possible for someone to be both pansexual and panromantic, meaning that they experience both sexual and romantic attraction regardless of gender identity or expression. However, it is also possible for someone to identify as one but not the other, depending on the specific nature of their attractions.

It's also important to note that while pansexuality and panromanticism are similar in that they both reject the gender binary and recognise the full spectrum of gender identities and expressions, they are distinct orientations and should not be used interchangeably.

Whats the difference between Pansexual and Bisexual?

Pansexuality and bisexuality are both sexual orientations that involve attraction to multiple genders. However, there are some key differences between the two.

Bisexuality refers to a sexual orientation where someone is attracted to people of two or more genders. Traditionally, the two genders referred to in bisexuality are male and female. However, many people who identify as bisexual also recognise and are attracted to people who identify as non-binary or other gender identities.

Pansexuality, on the other hand, refers to a sexual orientation where someone is attracted to people regardless of their gender identity or expression. This means that a pansexual person may be attracted to people who identify as male, female, non-binary, genderqueer, or any other gender identity.

The key difference between bisexuality and pansexuality is that bisexuality involves attraction to multiple genders, while pansexuality involves attraction to people regardless of gender identity. Some people who identify as pansexual may see this as a more inclusive term, as it acknowledges that gender is not binary and that attraction can exist outside of traditional male/female categories.

It's important to note that everyone's experiences with their own sexual orientation are unique and valid, and that labels such as bisexual and pansexual can mean different things to different people. What's most important is that people feel comfortable and accepted in their identities, whatever they may be.

Why is Pansexual & Panromantic Awareness Day important?

By celebrating Pansexual and Panromantic Awareness Day, we can help to increase visibility and understanding of these identities. This day also serves as a reminder of the importance of accepting and celebrating diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community.

In a 2018 survey of over 6,000 LGBTQIA+ individuals, conducted by the Trevor Project, 9% of respondents identified as pansexual or panromantic. This made pansexuality and panromanticism the fourth most common sexual or romantic orientation, after bisexual, gay, and lesbian.

It is important to remember that everyone deserves to be able to express their authentic selves, free from judgment or discrimination. By celebrating and supporting pansexual and panromantic individuals, we can help to create a more inclusive and accepting society for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

As Pansexual and panromantic identities are still not widely understood or accepted by many people, including within the LGBTQIA+ community. This lack of understanding can lead to feelings of isolation, erasure, and discrimination for pansexual and panromantic individuals.

It's important to recognise and celebrate the diversity of sexual and romantic orientations within the LGBTQIA+ community, including pansexuality and panromanticism. By increasing visibility and understanding of these identities, we can help to create a more inclusive and accepting society for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
